28th August 1940 – 14th May 2008

It is with great sadness that I announce the passing today of Fred Moselen, National Secretary of Scouting New Zealand a post he had held since April 1987.

With well over 55 years of service, Fred had a very large circle of friends in the Scout movement and I would ask you all to pass on this news through your own channels and networks.

The funeral service will be held at 11am on Tuesday 20th May at St. Peters Church on Willis Street, Wellington.

I am advised that no flowers be sent but that any donations be forwarded to the Scout Youth Foundation c/o National Office.

Our thoughts and prayers go to Fred's family

Fred Moselen- Obituary by Owen Rodgers
FRED MOSELEN — Born on 28th August 1940, the second eldest of a family of four, Frederick James Moselen was educated at the Mt. Albert Grammer School, Auckland Technical Institute and Wellington Polytechnic and studied for his qualifications at the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators. He was also a panel beater in Auckland for ten years before his move to Wellington.

Joining the professional staff of the Association at the National Office in Wellington as a Junior Field Commissioner attached to National Headquarters in 1966, Fred was not unfamiliar with Scouting having come through the Movement from Cubs where he first joined the Pt. Chevalier (Ascension) Scout Group in Auckland in 1950. He took out his first Warrant a day after attaining the age of 18 as an Assistant Scout Leader in 1958 and has been involved at Group, District and Area levels variously in both Auckland and Wellington holding Warrants as District Scout Leader, District Venturer Leader and Area Venturer Leader over the years.

His main job at National Headquarters evolved into looking after the activities of the sections and his title became National Activities Officer. During his early years, the opportunity arose through a study scholarship for Fred to visit the United States of America to spend three months on a study tour of Scouting including taking part in a five weeks training course at the Boy Scouts of America National Executive Institute in New Jersey from which he graduated in July 1969.
Apart from a period of four years from 1980 to 1984 when Fred took a break to work full time developing his farm in the Akatarawa Valley, his service has been continuous. A positional change in 1972 saw him become Executive Officer Administration and then a title change to Executive Officer Programme but when Fred returned after his “retirement break” he slotted back into to his old job in the Programme Department, a position he occupied until he became National Secretary in 1987 on the retirement of Alan Crowther.

For a period of over 16 years, including being a member of the National Training Team from 1976 until 1987, Fred worked in all departments except Commerce and Publications so, together with his years of voluntary service behind him as well, it all gave him a good feel on the many and varied aspects of the Movement, fitting him nicely for the position of National Secretary. In addition to his responsibilities with Scouting, Fred at one stage was also a member of the New Zealand Outdoor Training Advisory Board and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Advisory Committee.

But all good things come to an end sometime, and over his last year or so, Fred began to run down his working time in the office, gradually working fewer hours and days until it was fitting that his retirement should be planned for August in the year of the Centennial of New Zealand Scouting, 2008. He was awarded the Silver Tui, Scouting’s highest award for good service, in 1997 and made a Life Member of Scouting New Zealand at the Annual Meeting in 2008.

Introducing the NZ Contingent Leader for Australian Venture: Escape

Hello everyone

My name is Mark Godsiff. I’m the NZ Contingent Leader for the trip to the Australian Venture: Escape. I may look old, but I’ve got the heart and mind of a 25 year old. Just ask my local Venturer Unit!

In Scouting, I achieved the Queen Scout Award at the age of 16.5 and over the years have attended a number of Jamborees and Ventures, two of which were overseas and the rest were local. At present, I’m the Regional Venturer Leader for the Lower South Island, and have been running our local unit in South Otago for the last 5 years.

My full time job is Youth Training for Agriculture New Zealand in Dunedin, where I conduct hands on tutorials in the farming sector.

I’m looking forward to meeting Venturers from different parts of NZ and hope to enjoy challenge of being the AV09 NZ Contingent Leader. We have an awesome trip ahead of us, including a post-Venture tour.

If you are thinking of coming to Escape, welcome aboard the fun ship. You won’t regret it!

Hi there is there any scout groups out there who have any spare Endeavour Badges I need the Leadership,Community Endeavour, and Self Endeavour badges. I have four scouts nearly finished them and I can not buy any more as they have run out of them and are not going to make any more.Thanks David Richmond scouts
